Welcome to the RVersity RV driving school! This is number one of many RV driving lessons to come. Turning an RV’s steering wheel creates a couple of situations that require special attention. In this video, I’m sharing RV driving tips you can use to learn to drive a RV. When I started RV living I was towing a trailer, then driving a van before I learned to drive a motorhome. Taking an RV driving course is also a great way to learn how to drive a motorhome.

RV DRIVING QUESTIONS:

  • What’s important to know about driving a motorhome for the first time?
  • Will the dealership allow an RV test drive?
  • Do you need a special license to drive an rv?
  • How long did it take you to get used to maneuvering your rig?

Here is a link to the Rand McNally RV GPS I mentioned

Here is the video transcript:

00:00:00 welcome to RVersity’s RV driving school I’m blogging Randy your RV driving instructor and in this video I’m gonna be teaching you everything that I know and everything that I’ve learned about how to drive an RV or in my case a better home oh and before I forget make sure to subscribe and turn on that little bill icon somewhere around this video so you know each and every time I publish because this is only one of our RV driving lessons so when I started RVing I was towing a trailer and then I lived the van life.

00:00:46 I lived in a van until I bought this RV which is my Thor outlaw 37 RB Class A toy hauler and I bought it because of the garage and I can put my smart car in the garage and I get a lot of questions about it so I thought I’d take some time to answer them and if you have a question make sure to drop it below this video and who knows you might end up in my next one David asked me what do you recommend for a first-time RV r when it comes to driving a class a Motorhome I’ve never bought an RV before but I like the Class

00:01:29 A do you think the dealership will let you drive their RV to see what it’s like well David those are great questions and probably some things that I had to think about whenever I bought my first second and third RV what’s important to know about driving a motor home for the first time so I made a couple notes so the first thing is you want to remember you’re not a car okay you’re an RV and they’re completely different than driving a car I mean similar in the fact that you’re driving straight and doing

00:02:02 the same laws but you are longer and wider and taller than everyone else so you have to think about things like bridges or if you’re going over railroad tracks I always say think like a trucker because if a truck can’t go there you probably can’t get there either and that’s just physically so if I see trucks going under bridges I’ll normally assume that my RV can go under bridges but it’s a really good idea to probably take the height of your RV and maybe tape it on the dashboard so you know when you’re going into towns like where

00:02:43 you can fit bridges and low the other thing is gas station so when you’re at gas stations you really want to think about where you’re turning the RV it’s kind of straight or if you’re towing it could be even more awkward but you just have a really long back end you don’t want to hit somebody or the gas pump when you’re turning out so I always just say aim wide and then sometimes you have to back up but I try to avoid backing up my RV is really easy to backup and it’s just really easy a job so if you don’t have backup cameras

00:03:18 that’s another thing and I’ve had parking sensors or what’s called a mobile I on my van and those things are all things that you can either order with your RV in most cases or you can install something like that lighter if they don’t offer that with your RV but the GPS is a really good idea I just try to consider where it’s taking me if it tries to take me on shortcuts it’s like their normal GPS Google or ways or something I wouldn’t follow that 100% I would just do my research and make sure you’re not going through a small town

00:03:54 any kind of detours I just always try to stay on major highways or of course the interstate but a Rand McNally or maybe a truck type GPS I’ll put a link to the one I’m talking about the GPS below this video so you can find that and then we’ll the dealership allow a test drive yes and no if they think you’re serious about purchasing then yeah I think they’ll let you test drive I haven’t ever really had an issue with test driving an RV when I go I already know exactly what RV I’m going for and why

00:04:26 I’m going there I don’t just hop around to dealerships they may even offer like a driving course that you can take an RV driving course at the dealership so you could take something like that beforehand if you really wanted to drive an RV and if you go to one dealership and they don’t let you maybe try another dealership I’m sure you can probably drive one if you’re really serious about buying one thanks for subscribing and thanks for posting your question David and I hope to answer them keep them

00:04:54 coming if you have any more questions drop them below this video I do love to read them I have some more questions about driving an RV so Deborah asked me do you already have a CDL and how long did it take to get used to maneuvering your rig Thank You Deborah for asking that question I actually just made a video all about do you need a special license or what’s called a CDL as you referred to it commercial driver’s license for an RV which you can watch below this video in most states change your question in the

00:05:32 shortest sentence no you do not need a special license some states you might overall as long as you’re not towing or exceeding 40 feet or 26,000 pounds and that would be either just RV or if you’re towing it would be like the truck and the RV or say like a motor home in a boat or a motor home in a tow car you don’t want to be over 26,000 pounds or 40 feet I would just do a lot of research online and check like the DMV or the state websites I mean again the video that I mentioned down below this

00:06:04 video I went into way more detail about that how long did it take for you to get used to maneuvering your rig it took me maybe a month I guess but I drove it from the dealership which you probably saw in a video which I’ll put below this one it’s like I bought a bus or something when I bought the hystory outlaw from Lazydays I had already driven the RV on a test drive there and I driven the RV on another test drive for the first time then I drove it which was in Corbin Kentucky it was kind of sketchy and I wasn’t really sure and I

00:06:36 did hit the brake and everybody went forward in the army there was two other people in the RV but it didn’t really take that long I just need to watch the back end from towing and towing is a whole nother ballgame so I actually think towing is more difficult than driving this motor home and the reason that I bought this RV of course was because my smart car could go in the garage that we’re in so I really got this RV because it was easy to drive and I didn’t have we’re about towing it doesn’t really

00:07:06 take that long to figure out how to drive an RV unless you just are like a horrible driver there’s tons of chicks that draw Barbies and dudes the drop RV cell oh and I actually like driving the RV myself because I’m sketched out by any anybody else driving the RV it scares me thanks for asking that question Deborah and of course if you have any more questions put them below this video I love to read them in answer them now you know some tips for driving an RV and learning how to drive your RV or motor home but when

00:07:35 you’re trying to learn how to drive this you’re gonna make a lot of mistakes okay I made a ton of mistakes but you don’t have to make the same ones that I did because I put together an amazing little cheat sheet for the top mistakes that most RVers tend to make which you can pick up below in this video I’m Blogging Brandi from RVersity a University for RVers and if you want to learn how to RV like a pro I’ll teach you everything I know just head over and join my how to RV Academy I’ll put a link to that down
